OK , if you use the Internet regularly, teaching Internet safety and having some knowledge of potential attacks that take place is an excellent position to be in. There are huge threats that go unannounced in all corners of the world. This is the time to make sure that things are in order for basic Internet security. Not only does the security of your children depend on it, but your childrens very lives and your total financial security also depend on it.
These threats are real and have ruined some peoples lives. I would like to start by saying that teaching Internet safety to children and adults can help in the spreading of knowledge about this situation and bring more of an awareness to it. Ignoring a problem never alleviates it.
As we move on to the communication side of this, we ask ourselves if we have made an effort to talk to our kids about the dangers out there. This might be one of the best ways to get this across to your kids. If they hear it from you it has more of an impact. Ask them if they talk to a lot of different people or if any of there friends have played tricks on them and posed as another person. Also instill in them that they should never give out ant type of personal information to friends or acquaintances.I know that you think that they have more technical knowledge about computers but they are still kids and emotionally they they need our support.
Another great way to teach Internet security is to have the computer in a general area of the house. This will give you the opportunity to watch what is being used most often and to let them know how you feel about it. If they try to hide things that might be a sign some potential for them to become reclusive and constantly try to hide things from you so you cant see them all.
The bottom line is the Internet is more of a help in our daily lives than it is a hindrance. The knowledge we ingest from this form of information is astounding. There is only more information to be added and I dont think there will be a limit. Make sure if you have the know how for teaching Internet safety to your family as they are the ones you most care about.
