Both kids and adults alike, including those going into their adolescent years, are often curious with the thought of meeting new people through the Internet, especially via a chat room or forums. While there is nothing wrong with chatting online and using technology, it can be harmful, especially if someone finds out about the childs personal information and tries to exploit him or her into uncompromising and unnecessary positions. This is why it is important for parents to take more precautions to ensure their children have the knowledge, more so in this so called cyber world.
If one was to talk about something that happens every day in chat rooms across the Internet it is child exploitation. To give a scenario of what a child predator would do would be this: The person will sit idle and try to get a niche to start a conversation in a chat room sometimes for hours trying to get involved. As time progresses he finally get a bite and moves in with lies and deceit and in some cases children do give in to this and the worst sometimes happens.
Young girls seem to be the most exploited by a perpetrator trying to sweet talk her into sexual activity. When the innocent girl and the perpetrator get better acquainted via chat and/or text messaging, the perpetrator gets more confident and begins to make online gestures and dirty talk. There is such a term for a face to face meeting. Its name is an eyeball. This type of occurrence will eventually lead to more invitations and more advances, and eventually back to his or her place where the actual sexual activity occurs.
The child may find it quite difficult to let go of the ulterior motivated virtual relationship because they feel that there is an actual friendship going on, but the cruel truth is, the predator is actually setting them up. When this happens, it can turn out bad for a lot of reasons, such as robbing the family, looking for sexual activity, even to the extent of kidnap and murder.
Social networking sites and chatting is fine, but there are some precautions that have to be put into place before they can be used by kids and young adults. There is no telling what the overall effect in the childs life would be. One way of parents protecting their children is by checking on them from time to time, especially when they are using the Internet, a powerful yet potentially misused type of Internet safety tip for kids.
