Many people that are interested in perhaps pursuing driving a taxi as a job want to know this question above all others. Obviously, the financial investment of having to own a cab is asking a lot from someone that is looking for a job, and many people are afraid that if taxi services require ownership that they would not be able to get the job they're interested in. Luckily, most taxi companies out there do not work on an 'own only' basis.
Instead, most taxi companies come up with a plan wherein they let their drivers lease cabs from the company. Once the driver is given an offer of employment they draw up a contract for leasing the cab from the company as part of the terms of the employment.
It is important to realize though, that this is a lease, not simply the use of a company vehicle. This means that all the costs for the maintenance of the vehicle, such as cleaning and fuel, fall on the driver's shoulders. This is something that many drivers don't think about when first thinking of getting into the taxi business, but it's important to take into consideration. Cleaning the cab can take a lot of time outside of work, and fuel in the cab will consume a considerable portion of your profits.
It's helpful to realize that the lease agreement usually contains much more than the car itself. If you've ever gone for a ride in a taxi you know that taxis have a lot of equipment in them. Usually this will include a meter, a payment processor, a radio, and perhaps a GPS. These lease agreements typically include all of this with the car, so from the moment the lease is signed you're ready to get started as a driver.
This doesn't mean that it's impossible to be a taxi driver that owns their car though. Many people that have driven taxi for a few years already know that this is the job that they're going to want to follow until retirement. Once they've reached this conclusion, many see a financial advantage in deciding to own a vehicle rather than simply leasing it. When this is the case, courier companies usually have an option wherein they will hire a driver that owns their own cab, as long as it meets the minimum standards that are set out by the company.
