How Are Smaller and Local Courier Companies Different From the Large Couriers?

When you first start operating a company in the L.A. Area, you're going to have many questions that you're going to have to answer about how your company is going to do business. One of these which might not seem important at first but that can be, is what kind of Los Angeles courier service your company is going to use. The choice can basically be boiled down to two types of options: you can do business with either a small, local courier, or with a larger, internationally sized company like FedEx.

There are certainly differences between these two types of companies. These aren't good or bad in themselves, and there is no answer as to which type of company is better than the other. Instead, it is about realizing the strengths and weaknesses of each of those types of companies and realizing which would be more appropriate to your organization.

The primary difference between these two types of companies is their scope. When a small courier has a request from a L.A. Based client that they want to ship something Egypt, or Russia, or other exotic destinations, that courier is almost absolutely going to have to end up sending that package with a carrier like UPS or FedEx anyway. These companies have a totally global reach, and can be the best choice if you're someone that needs to ship to every corner of the globe on a regular basis.

Smaller courier companies' strengths don't lie in their ability to ship internationally, but in their ability to provide excellent service on a more personal level. Because they have fewer clients, they can assign account representatives and couriers that will get more familiar with every operation that they provide service to. This can often result in a more personal experience, and gives the courier more information which helps them to solve any problems which may crop up for their clients logistically.

Prices are often different between these two types of companies, but generally equalize over the long term. What this means is that while certain types of services can be cheaper with smaller companies, like local shipping, other services might be more affordable, from the larger carriers, such as storage. In the end, making a decision about which type of courier your company should be doing business with comes down to the preferences of you and your management team, and the scope of your shipping operations.
