For the most part people do not understand that yeast infection, also known as Candiiasis, Candida infection, Monilia or thrush is brought on by microscopic Candida bacteria or yeast.

A small number of people realise that Candida bacteria in fact inhabit in our intestines and all over the outside of our bodies, but principally in the intestines, mouth and throat.

In a normal healthy person there may be millions of Candida bacteria. They are typically kept under control by healthy pro-biotic bacteria, such as that found in yoghurts and yoghurt drinks, etc.

The Candida bacteria perform a useful function in our intestines and our bodies need the Candida bacteria to kill detrimental bacteria and keep them under control.

In typical healthy individuals the pro-biotic bacteria retain a healthy balance so that there are no unpleasant effects.

Unhappily antibiotics can kill not just harmful bacteria but our friendly bacteria as well and lessen the quantity in our intestines. This can frequently mean that there is not an adequate amount of friendly bacteria to keep the Candida bacteria in check.

Incorrect diet, improper pH balance or difficulties with our immune system might also cause Candida to reproduce out of control.

After our normal internal balance is lost and the Candida are able to reproduce out of control they change from a yeast form to a fungal type that can overrun the entire body.

When this happens the fungal type of Candida produces roots that can pierce the walls of the intestines. The yeast, bacteria and partly digested food could then get into the bloodstream triggering itching, rashes, irritations and further symptoms.

The most regularly recognized symptoms are skin rash, thrush, vaginal infections and nail-bed infections. Candida yeast like to breed on the surface in humid damp parts of the body.

Infections in the mouth could grow to be more common as we become older as well as infections underneath skin folds, below the breasts and around dentures.

There is a common belief that yeast infection only happens on the surface of the skin and may be dealt with easily with creams and over-the-counter prescription.

Alas, as outlined above, the position is often not that straight forward. Wherever the infections are relentless and persist in coming back this can be the indication of a more serious internal predicament.

We ought to understand, however, that by the time these external conditions can be seen the Candida could well be already out of control internally.

As the disease could be caused by a mixture of diverse factors. Doctors could have trouble controlling it using drugs and over the counter prescriptions.

Nearly all sufferers still, alas, leave cure in the hands of the over the counter industry and their Doctors. Not many of us take responsibility for our own health and well-being and do our own research to discover a permanent cure for this unpleasant disease.
